Could someone please explain the term indie?
Is it a genre?
Is it a way ppl make music?
Is it a business model?
I first started listening to "music" when kurt gave me a disposable razer blade and when indie came around I already turned off the radio so to speak.

I really don't do genre's to be honest. It really gets on my nerves that people always have to label things and have a nice little box to put them in.
After the punk explosion in the late seventies the whole movement went back underground and diversified into a whole range of different styles of guitar music. The only thing all these bands had in common was that the music was in most cases uncomprimising and quite uncommercial thus making the chance of getting a record deal with a commercial company about as likely as York City getting promoted. These bands soon realised that making and distributing records was really not that hard and soon small D.I.Y record labels were springing up all over the place and the independent scene was born. As the eighties progressed all kinds of music was released on independent (indie) labels and some of them became quite big business. The likes of Factory and Creation to name just two built up big rosters of artists some of whom sold tons of records and some were just there because they were good. By the end of the eighties major labels had realised the potential and credibility of the indie scene and began cashing in on it taking over independents and even starting their own offshoot labels posing as independents but with major label money behind them and soon independent sounding bands were in the mainstream. These days bands who have never been on independents and actually sound commercial call themselves indie because it gives them some kind of false credibility.
True independence comes from truly creative and inventive artists who make music which challenges peoples expectations and views. 99% of these bands never make any money but thats not what it's all about...is it? |

Thank you sir.
it's confusing to me for sure. all this indie stuff certainly shows how worthless labels are... (read labels anyway you like). I for one can laugh at all of this silliness because it looks to me like you have to be of the industry to know what is not of the industry. What i mean is when i go down to the local live house i never thought oh <*indie*>. I guess in the end indie does not have anything to do with the music.
Looks like the tinklers from burning world #33 know what its all about, check them out ppl.
